How Does the µ-Slide Tissue Engineering Work?
What Is the Principle of the µ-Slide Tissue Engineering?
The µ-Slide Tissue Engineering provides a flexible platform for designing and studying complex 2D and 3D tissue models under controlled fluidic conditions. The slide consists of a central workspace flanked by parallel channels. The workspace can be filled and structured with photocrosslinkable hydrogels such as GelMA, PEG-DA, collagen, or hyaluronic acid.
These hydrogels can be polymerized into defined patterns using the ibidi Micro Illumination System or similar systems. The design of the slide allows for seamless integration with the ibidi Pump System for controlled perfusion, simulating physiological flow and nutrient transport.
What Is the µ-Slide Tissue Engineering Used For?
The µ-Slide Tissue Engineering is designed for advanced 2D and 3D cell culture experiments that require a realistic tissue environment and fluid control, such as tissue and organ modeling, flow and perfusion studies, and gradient formation.
Can I Use Photopatterning or Microstructuring With the µ-Slide Tissue Engineering?
Yes. With the ibidi Micro Illumination System, for example, you can photopattern or microstructure to define where cells adhere, grow, and migrate. This technique allows for the creation of highly controlled tissue architectures, including aligned neurons, patterned co-cultures, and wound-healing models. Additionally, to mimic native tissue environments and guide cell behavior, surface topographies and protein patterns can be generated.
Structural Examples

The central workspace and side channels can be structured using photocrosslinkable hydrogels, defining the locations for the cell/tissue model and fluidic access.
Is the µ-Slide Tissue Engineering Compatible With the ibidi Pump System?
Yes. The µ-Slide Tissue Engineering can be easily connected to pump systems such as the ibidi Pump System via the Luer adapters for precise control of perfusion rates and flow profiles. This setup allows you to simulate physiological conditions such as blood flow, interstitial flow, or dynamic shear stress. The channels can be perfused in parallel to achieve complex flow scenarios.
Flow Setup Examples

Depending on the structure, various perfusion methods can be used, ranging from perfusing a single channel to multiple flows in parallel.
Is the µ-Slide Tissue Engineering Suitable for Live Cell Imaging?
Yes. The slide features a high-optical-quality bottom for excellent imaging with widefield, confocal, or live cell microscopy, and it maintains physiological conditions when used with ibidi Stage Top Incubators or other incubators.
Do I Need the ibidi Micro Illumination System to Use the µ-Slide Tissue Engineering?
You can fill the hydrogel or scaffold without any structuring, or you can perform 2D or 3D photostructuring with the ibidi Micro Illumination System or other photoinduced technologies.
